DOT Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) Evaluations

I am a DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), providing evaluations for employees in safety-sensitive transportation roles following a DOT drug or alcohol violation.

What is a SAP Evaluation?

A SAP evaluation is a required step in the return-to-duty process after a failed or refused DOT drug or alcohol test. As your SAP, my role is to conduct an evaluation, determine what education, treatment, or follow-up testing is appropriate, and guide you through each stage of the return-to-duty process as defined by DOT regulations (49 CFR Part 40).

What to Expect

  • Initial evaluation — a face-to-face (virtual) clinical assessment to determine your treatment or education needs

  • Education or treatment plan — a recommendation tailored to your situation

  • Follow-up evaluation — to confirm compliance and readiness to return to duty

  • Ongoing monitoring — coordination on required follow-up testing per DOT guidelines

Evaluations are conducted using a HIPAA-compliant virtual platform.

Who This Is For

This evaluation is required for employees in DOT-regulated safety-sensitive positions — including commercial drivers, pilots, railroad, pipeline, and transit workers — who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol regulation.
